Employability Training?
Transitioning from university to a professional career as a Biomedical Scientist can be challenging especially for students who do not secure and complete the IBMS pre-registration training portfolio required for HCPC registration.
Training is usually completed during a placement year in a pathology department as part of an Applied Biomedical Science degree or over the course of a Biomedical Science Degree Apprenticeship.
Both of these pathways provide guaranteed route to HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist upon successful completion of the degree and IBMS portfolio. However, these opportunities are not always widely accessible to all students.
Poorly informed students:
Many students are unaware of the mandatory IBMS pre-registration training portfolio in an accredited laboratory to qualify for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist. Many only become aware of this in their second and final years and others after graduation.
Still others may not even be aware that the university must be IBMS accredited and may graduate with degrees that are not accredited by the IBMS requiring them to enroll for additional top up modules after graduation.
Not so honest universities:
Student misunderstandings may often be exacerbated by the way universities advertise their degree programs. Offering placement years as optional components of their degree programs means that some students mistakenly believe that placements are arranged by the university, only to discover later that securing a placement is entirely their own responsibility.
While universities offering three-year degree programs strive to assist students in finding placements, they cannot guarantee their availability. This is determined by the capacity of pathology laboratories to accommodate trainees.
Unfortunately, the limited number of pathology laboratory placements means that many graduates complete their degrees without the laboratory training required for HCPC registration.
To address these challenges, universities should communicate more transparently with students about the placement process, that while support is available, securing a placement is ultimately the student's responsibility.
Clearer guidance would help prospective students make informed decisions about their educational and career pathways, ensuring they are better prepared for the realities of the profession.
Student and Graduate Alternatives:
Fortunately, alternative pathways exist to assist students and graduates in progressing their career propects toward IBMS portfolio training and HCPC registration. Targeting opportunities as Biomedical Assistants (BMA) or Associate Practitioners (AP) in pathology laboratories can provide valuable entry points.
These support roles often serve as an in-house talent pool, with departments often extending opportunities for pre-registration training to these individuals as in-house trainees.
Employability Training:
Due to the potential for career advancement, BMA and AP roles in pathology laboratories have become extremely competitive stepping stones for biomedical science students and graduates. Employability training courses can significantly enhance employability prospects enabling students and graduates to stand out in the job market.
Second year students aspiring for limited placement opportunities that may become available from time to time through the university would enhance their appeal to pathology laboratory recruiters.
Employability Training is our specialized program aimed at enhancing the job readiness of biomedical science students and graduates with no prior experience in pathology laboratories.
Using virtual reality simulations, the training offers immersive, online experiences that replicate real-world pathology laboratory environments to give non-placement biomedical science students the online equivalent of pathology laboratory training.
These simulations are developed to closely reflect the daily operations and standard procedures followed in existing laboratory departments.
The program therefore aims to equip students and graduates with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to boost their employability by aligning training outcomes with generic NHS person specifications for pathology laboratory roles.
